What are carbohydrates?

Throughout history, the importance of carbohydrates has changed. In the past, we were taught that carbs derived from bread, cereals, rice, and pasta were the foundation for our daily nutrition intake. The issue with this is these types of carbohydrates have usually undergone chemical processing which strips naturally occurring starches, fiber, and protein that are essential to digestion and gut health.

All carbohydrates are made from sugars and are found in almost every food group except meat and eggs. While carbohydrates are divided into four categories, they are classified into two groups: simple and complex carbohydrates.

Glucose is our main source of energy. It Is very important for our day-to-day functions as well as the primary source of energy for our brain. When we eat a healthy balanced diet containing fiber and complex carbs, we provide the right fuel for balanced blood pressure, energy levels, and brain function in addition to keeping inflammation at bay. They also supply energy to our red blood cells and muscles.

While there are circumstances and underlying health issues (like diabetes) that require a low-carb lifestyle, here at Meels we always offer healthy side dishes containing both complex carbohydrates and low-carb options.

Healthy choices like brown rice, black rice, quinoa, and veggie as opposed to white rice and white pasta or bread are always a better option when considering a healthy lifestyle. These items can take longer to prepare so we make them available for you on every menu.

Did we mention that consuming complex carbohydrates reduces sugar cravings? You can have your cake and eat it too! All while nourishing a healthy body and mind.
